Giant Chalcolithic Kiln Points to Specialized Pottery Production in Romania
Archaeologists investigating a Copper Age settlement in north-eastern Romania have uncovered an unusually large and well-preserved pottery kiln that may provide some of the clearest evidence yet for intensified ceramic production in prehistoric south-eastern Europe. Excavated at Ursoaia in 2025, the two-chambered installation belongs to the Cucuteni–Trypillia cultural tradition and stands out for both its size and its sophisticated system for controlling heat and airflow.
The Ursoaia settlement lies on a hilltop in Iași County, where a magnetometer survey in 2024 revealed an archaeological area of almost eight hectares. The survey identified roughly 60 burnt dwellings arranged in small clusters, numerous pits and at least eight possible kilns, all enclosed by a ditch. The layout of the settlement and its abundant decorated pottery place it within the Cucuteni B1/Trypillia BII–CI phase of the early fourth millennium BC, a dating also supported by radiocarbon evidence.
One particularly strong magnetic anomaly near the settlement ditch was investigated through targeted excavation. It proved to be a large bicameral updraught kiln built into the inner slope of the ditch. This position appears to have offered several practical advantages: the slope helped support the structure, protected it from wind and allowed controlled access to the firing area.
The buried lower chamber measured about 3.10 by 2.40 metres and supported a working surface of more than seven square metres, estimated at approximately 7.5 square metres. Four long fire channels ran through the chamber, separated by three substantial supports carved directly from the natural clay and then levelled with additional clay. Above them, removable clay slabs formed a permeable grate that separated the lower combustion area from the upper chamber where pottery was fired.
This arrangement allowed hot gases to travel beneath the slabs before rising into the upper chamber, helping distribute heat more evenly and reducing thermal stress. Based on the preserved remains and fragments of the vault, the complete kiln may originally have stood around 2.2 to 2.5 metres high, with an upper chamber volume of about 12 cubic metres. Repairs and additional clay applied to the floor, walls and supports also indicate that the installation went through repeated firing cycles rather than being used only once.
Microscopic and chemical observations of the kiln lining, slabs and associated pottery provide further evidence for repeated exposure to high temperatures. The floor slabs are consistent with firing at roughly 800–900°C, while parts of the supports and vault may have reached local peaks of around 950–1100°C. These estimates are not exact measurements of firing temperature, but they support a model in which the kiln operated through controlled cycles of preheating, loading, sustained heating and cooling.
Radiocarbon dates from animal remains associated with the installation indicate that it was in use around 3950–3800 BC. This places it within a period when two-chambered updraught kilns were already established in the Cucuteni–Trypillia world, but the Ursoaia example is exceptional in scale. Most known kilns from this cultural tradition have working surfaces of roughly two to four square metres, while even some of the largest previously published examples remain below five square metres.
The Ursoaia kiln therefore pushes the known upper limit for this type of firing installation. Its size, estimated capacity and carefully engineered airflow system suggest that pottery production at the settlement may have gone beyond ordinary household needs. The presence of several additional kilns within a relatively small settlement strengthens the possibility that ceramic manufacture was becoming more organized and specialized.
Researchers remain cautious, however, about describing Ursoaia as a fully developed community workshop. More excavation is needed to determine how many kilns operated at the same time, what kinds of vessels they produced and how pottery circulated beyond the settlement. Even so, the discovery offers an important new benchmark for understanding how technological knowledge, production scale and craft organization were changing in Copper Age Europe.
