Four Historic Shipwrecks Discovered in North Carolina
Archaeologists from East Carolina University’s Program in Maritime Studies have uncovered four historic shipwrecks and colonial waterfront structures at the Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site in North Carolina. One wreck may be the remains of the Spanish privateer La Fortuna, which exploded near the port during an attack in 1748.
The discoveries also include a vessel likely used for land reclamation, a possible colonial flatboat, and an unidentified wreck. Additional features such as timber wharves, a historic causeway, and numerous artifacts were recorded.
Researchers warn that shoreline erosion is threatening these finds, prompting emergency recovery of over 40 timbers from the possible La Fortuna. The timbers have been transferred to a conservation lab for preservation. Investigations continue to determine the identity and historical significance of the four wrecks.
