Rare Late Roman Bone Box Unearthed in Worcestershire Burial
An exceptional artefact from the late Roman period has been uncovered during archaeological excavations in the town of Broadway, offering new insight into craftsmanship and burial practices in the northern Cotswolds.
The discovery was made at Milestone Ground, where investigations revealed evidence of around 8,000 years of human activity, spanning prehistoric, Roman, and early medieval periods. Among the many finds, a finely carved box made of bone stood out as the most remarkable.
The box was recovered from the grave of a young woman, suggesting it held personal, symbolic, or ritual significance. Archaeologists believe the object may contribute to a better understanding of daily life, beliefs, and skilled workmanship in the late Roman period in this part of Britain.
The excavation was carried out by Worcestershire Archaeology and was commissioned ahead of planned development. The project has prompted a reassessment of the area’s historical importance, highlighting Broadway as a location with a far deeper and more complex past than previously understood.
The discovery has also been featured in the BBC television series Digging for Britain, bringing the find to a wider audience and showcasing the archaeological significance of the site.
