New Mosaics and Temple Found in Ancient Olympos
Excavations at the ancient city of Olympos in Antalya, Türkiye, have uncovered new mosaic floors and a notable inscription at the entrance of Church No. 1, reading: "Only those on the righteous path may enter here." The site, with remains from the Hellenistic to Byzantine periods, has been under continuous excavation since 2006.
Richly decorated mosaics with geometric and plant motifs, as well as benefactors’ names, confirm Olympos as a major center of Lycian mosaic art. Excavations also reveal how a Roman necropolis evolved into a Byzantine civilian settlement.
Findings this year include large storage jars (pithoi) and a multi-room house destroyed by fire in the 6th century and rebuilt. Work will continue on a newly identified temple, the Bishop’s Palace, Church No. 3, and the necropolis area. Artifacts are currently on display at the Antalya Archaeological Museum.
