Egyptian Vase Found in Pompeii Street Food Shop
Archaeologists in Pompeii have unearthed a precious Egyptian vase in the city’s famous “street food” area, revealing unexpected cultural ties between Rome and Egypt.
The vase, discovered in the kitchen of the Thermopolium of Regio V, features Egyptian-style hunting scenes produced in Alexandria and was likely used as a food container. Experts say it illustrates how Eastern art and religion influenced daily Roman life—even among the lower-middle classes.
According to Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii excavations, the find shows the blending of sacred and domestic spaces, as ordinary people decorated homes and shops with objects reflecting diverse beliefs and aesthetics.
The Thermopolium, one of over 80 ancient fast-food restaurants in Pompeii, had a kitchen, storage rooms, and an upstairs apartment for its owners. The discovery further confirms how Pompeii’s multicultural society thrived before the city’s destruction by Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79.
