Iron Key Unearthed at Bitlis Castle
Archaeologists excavating Bitlis Castle in southeastern Turkey have discovered a large 29-centimeter iron key, believed to belong to the fortress’s main entrance gate. The key, featuring a double-toothed design, was found inside a 50-square-meter vaulted reception hall near the castle’s southern gate.
The excavation, conducted by Ahlat Museum under the consultancy of Bitlis Eren University, also revealed water cisterns, pipes, Muslim graves, coins, traditional ovens (tandırs), oil lamps, and other artifacts.
Experts date the hall and the key to the 15th or 16th century. The finds will undergo preservation and be transferred to Ahlat Museum. The key’s size and design distinguish it from typical civilian keys, highlighting its importance in the castle’s history.
