3000 Year Old Multicolored Mural Found in Peru
Archaeologists in Peru have uncovered a 3,000-year-old multicolored mural at Huaca Yolanda on the country’s northwest coast. Painted in blue, yellow, red, and black, the mural depicts fish, stars, shamans, and a giant bird with outstretched wings. Measuring nearly 20 feet long and 9.5 feet tall, it dates to the Formative Period (2000–1000 B.C.), when the first complex societies emerged in the Andes. Researchers believe it once decorated the atrium of a ceremonial temple, contemporary with Chavín de Huántar, a major pre-Inca ritual center.
