Decorated Bags Found in Corded Ware Burials
Ahead of the SuedOstLink powerline construction near Krauschwitz, Saxony‑Anhalt, archaeologists uncovered remarkable burials from the Corded Ware Culture (3rd millennium BC) alongside older Baalberge Culture mounds.
Three graves contained leather or fabric bags richly embroidered with dog teeth, likely carried in front of the body and possibly used as baby carriers. Some bags required up to 350 teeth from medium‑sized dogs bred for this purpose. These labor‑intensive, non‑inheritable items were reserved for an elite class of women, reflecting status and distinctive burial traditions.
The finds add rare insight into Neolithic costume, craft, and society in central Germany.
