Byzantine Mosaic Unearthed in Damascus Countryside
Syria’s Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums has announced the discovery of a Byzantine-period mosaic in the countryside of Damascus, near the town of Qarah. The excavation began after a local farmer reported the presence of ancient remains on his agricultural land.
The site, locally known as Al-Qabou, lies approximately 15 kilometers northwest of Qarah, close to the Lebanese border. Archaeological work at the location revealed part of a mosaic floor decorated with geometric designs in white, black, and reddish tones. Traces of lime plaster were also identified, along with remains of wall frescoes on the southern side of the structure.
Initial assessments indicate that the mosaic and the associated architectural elements date to the Byzantine era. The discovery adds to the archaeological significance of the Qarah region, which preserves evidence of successive historical periods, including classical, Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic phases.
