Located in the southwestern corner of Alberta, the Waterton Biosphere Reserve spans some of the most scenic and ecologically rich landscapes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and prairie grasslands. It shares a border with the Glacier Biosphere Reserve in Montana, USA.
Together, they form the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. At the core of the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, the region is globally renowned for being one of North America's largest remaining intact ecosystems.
The area maintains a rural character with no significant urban centers.
Waterton Biosphere Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
