Point Pelee National Park, located in Essex County in southwestern Ontario, is Canada's southernmost mainland national park. Established in 1918, it was the first park in the country created specifically for conservation.
The park occupies a distinctive peninsula that extends into Lake Erie, composed of marshes, woodlands, and beaches, and tapers into a narrow point. Middle Island, part of the park since 2000, lies just north of the U.
    S. border in Lake Erie and represents the southernmost point of land in Canada.
The park’s terrain was shaped by glacial activity and includes a foundation of sand, silt, and gravel. Renowned for its rich biodiversity, Point Pelee is a critical stopover for migrating birds and monarch butterflies, attracting thousands of nature enthusiasts annually.
It was designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1987.
