Located in Nova Scotia, Bras d'Or Lake is a saltwater estuarine system often described as an 'inland sea,' with three natural openings connecting it to the Atlantic Ocean. Formed by the flooding of a river-lake network during the Holocene transgression, the lake is deep, geologically diverse, and fed by twelve major watersheds from surrounding highlands and lowlands.
Its terrestrial, marine, and coastal ecosystems support both human populations and a wide variety of plant and animal life. The area has been home to Indigenous Mi'kmaq communities since post-glacial times, and their descendants remain a significant part of the population today.

Bras d'Or Lake Biosphere Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
