Grasslands National Park, established in 1981, is located in southern Saskatchewan near the village of Val Marie, bordering the United States state of Montana. It is one of only two national parks in the province and is composed of two distinct areas: the East Block and the West Block.
The park preserves one of Canada’s last remaining tracts of native mixed-grass and shortgrass prairie ecosystems, part of the larger Northern Short Grasslands ecoregion. This rare landscape, shaped by a semi-arid climate, provides vital habitat for a range of wildlife including black-tailed prairie dogs—unique to this area in Canada—along with bison, pronghorn antelope, burrowing owls, and swift foxes.
The flora includes blue grama, needlegrass, silver sagebrush, and plains cottonwood. The park receives around 12,000 visitors annually and offers a rare opportunity to experience the vast, open prairie wilderness.
