Elk Island National Park, located in Alberta about 35 km east of Edmonton, is a key conservation area known especially for protecting the plains bison. Despite being Canada's eighth smallest national park by area, it is the country's largest fully fenced park, covering 194 square kilometers.
The park lies along the Yellowhead Highway and showcases a mix of ecosystems typical of the northern prairie plateau. Its unique terrain features a knob and kettle landscape with a blend of fescue grasslands, aspen parkland, and boreal forests.
Elk Island is also notable for being home to both the largest and smallest land mammals in North America—the wood bison and pygmy shrew.
