Situated in Alberta, western Canada, Beaver Hills is a morainic landscape shaped by glacial retreat approximately 12,000 years ago. The area is characterized by Boreal-zone features including wetlands, shallow lakes, and rocky terrain.
Today, the biosphere includes agricultural lands, mixedwood forests, grasslands, and wetlands, offering ideal habitats for wildlife such as bison, elk, deer, moose, and a variety of waterfowl. Beavers are especially abundant.
Thirty-six plant species and six plant communities in the moraine are considered sensitive due to their limited distribution in Alberta. Agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for the area's 12,000 residents.

Beaver Hills Biosphere Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
