Located about 32 km east of Montreal, Mont Saint-Hilaire is a prominent circular hill that rises roughly 250 meters above the Saint Lawrence lowlands. It preserves one of the last remaining patches of old-growth deciduous forest in Quebec and is home to several rare and endangered species.
Positioned near a major urban area of 3.5 million people, the reserve faces growing pressures from urban sprawl and rising tourism, which contribute to forest fragmentation.
Tourism and agriculture play a significant economic role in the five towns situated in the transition zone of the reserve.
Mont Saint-Hilaire Biosphere Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
