La Mauricie National Park is situated near Shawinigan in Quebec’s Laurentian Mountains and encompasses 536 km² of forested terrain within the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. The park features over 150 lakes and numerous ponds, creating a tranquil network of waterways ideal for canoeing, kayaking, and camping.
Once heavily logged in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the park’s forests have naturally regenerated, now hosting a diverse mix of coniferous and deciduous species. The park lies within the Eastern forest-boreal transition zone and supports a variety of wildlife, including moose, black bears, river otters, and beavers.
It is also home to the rare wood turtle, a species of conservation concern in Canada. The park derives its name from the nearby Saint-Maurice River, while the Matawin River forms its western and northern boundaries.
