The Lac Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve is centered around Lake Saint-Pierre, a fluvial lake formed by the retreat of the Champlain Sea at the end of the last ice age. Located within the St.
Lawrence River, the lake and its surrounding wetlands and archipelago are recognized as internationally important under the Ramsar Convention. The area hosts North America's largest heronry and serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds.
The biosphere reserve is also a complex human-environment interface, with significant agricultural activity, major shipping routes for post-Panamax vessels, and proximity to one of Quebec’s largest urban centers. Balancing ecological conservation with economic and urban development presents a major management challenge.

Lac Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
