Located on the western shore of the upper Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, the Fundy Biosphere Reserve is globally recognized for its extreme tidal ranges, dramatic coastlines, and rich biodiversity. The area features a mosaic of ecosystems including Acadian mixed forests, salt marshes, tidal mudflats, and rugged river valleys that cut deeply into the landscape.
These valleys form dramatic gorges with waterfalls, rapids, and steep cliffs. Elevations vary from 30 meters below sea level in estuarine zones to 400 meters inland.
In addition to its ecological importance, the region is steeped in cultural heritage, from the original Mi’kmaq inhabitants to early French and European settlers who helped shape the current landscape.
Fundy Biosphere Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
