The Riding Mountain Biosphere Reserve is located in south-central Canada, approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg in Manitoba. Positioned at the transition between grassland and boreal forest biomes, the area is predominantly forested, especially with trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides).
Though grasslands occupy only a small portion—around 7,400 hectares—they are ecologically significant, particularly the rare climax rough fescue community, which marks the easternmost edge of its range in Canada.
Riding Mountain Biosphere Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
