Located in Quebec, the Manicouagan–Uapishka Biosphere Reserve features a dramatic northern landscape where the Saint Lawrence River flows along the southern boundary and the massive, circular Manicouagan reservoir—formed by a meteorite impact—dominates the north. The two systems are connected through a network of rivers winding through vast boreal forests and rugged wilderness.
The region supports a wide array of plant and animal life adapted to cold climates, including caribou and black bears. The name 'Uapishka' comes from the Innu language, meaning 'white summits', referring to the snow-capped peaks of the Uapishka (Groulx) Mountains, a key feature of the area.
The reserve combines natural richness with Indigenous heritage and local community involvement in sustainable development and conservation.
Manicouagan–Uapishka Biosphere Reserve is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
