Art of illumination: Təzhib/Tazhib/Zarhalkori/Tezhip/Naqqoshlik
Illumination is a centuries-old decorative art used to decorate religious texts, literary and historical manuscripts, marriage contracts, and commercial treaties. Gold leaf or gold paint are the main components of this art and natural dyes are also used.
This craft is transmitted through apprenticeships as well as through formal and informal education, including at many universities, academies, research centers and public and private workshops. Illumination is closely linked to the beliefs and cultural practices of local communities in the countries concerned, and it also contributes to the preservation of historical and cultural objects for future generations.
Art of illumination: Təzhib/Tazhib/Zarhalkori/Tezhip/Naqqoshlik was inscribed in 2023 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Azerbaijan, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan.
