The first ever example of a medieval prayer beads was discovered on the island of Lindisfarne in Britain. Archaeologists pointed out that the discovery dates back to the period from the 8th to the 9th century AD, and it was made of salmon vertebrae, as the fish was an important symbol of early Christianity. Scientists also say that the vertebrae of the fish clearly appear to be personal prayer beads.
