Sericulture and Traditional Production of Silk for Weaving

Sericulture and Traditional Production of Silk for Weaving

It is the set of practices related to sericulture and traditional silk production, in which farmers who raise silkworms nurture them through their entire life cycle, planting mulberry trees that provide the leaves on which the worms feed and produce silkworm eggs. The fibers are reeled from the cocoons, spun into silk threads, cleaned and dyed.
Silk products are highly appreciated by all social and cultural classes and people use them on special occasions such as weddings, funerals, and family meetings. This practice is considered an expression of cultural identity and social cohesion, and the silk trade has contributed to the exchange of culture and science within the same country and between the countries concerned.

Sericulture and Traditional Production of Silk for Weaving was inscribed in 2022 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan.
