Whistled Language

Whistled Language

Whistled language is a method of communication used in Turkey to simulate and articulate words by whistling. This practice developed because of the steep mountains and rugged terrain in the area, which prompted Turkish farmers to find an alternative way to communicate over long distances.
This practice is a major reflection of the cultural identity of the societies of the region, and it promotes communication and solidarity between individuals. The interest of the new generation in whistled language has diminished due to the use of mobile phones, but societies have worked very actively to promote this language practice at the national and international levels to ensure its sustainability.

Whistled Language was inscribed in 2017 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Turkey.
