Oldest Roman Purse Unearthed in Czechia
Archaeologists in South Moravia discovered a rare Roman bronze wrist purse fragment, likely the oldest found in Czechia, dating back over 1,800 years. It was uncovered at Hradisko Hill, once occupied by the 10th Roman Legion during Emperor Marcus Aurelius’s reign. Though only 30% of the purse survived, experts identified it as a forearm-worn money container, possibly holding around 50 silver denarii—used for personal or military expenses.
No coins were found inside, but many silver Roman coins nearby confirmed the era. The 10th Legion was stationed there from 172–180 AD, during Rome’s attempt to establish a new province, Marcomannia. The plan failed, and the area was abandoned after Marcus Aurelius’s death. The purse is now displayed at the Mušov Visitor Centre, offering insight into Roman military life on the empire’s frontier.
