Spring Celebration, Hıdrellez
The Spring Celebration or Hidrellez is held on the 6th of May every year in both Turkey and North Macedonia, where many festivities and rituals associated with nature are held, ensuring the well-being, fertility and prosperity of the family and community, and the protection of livestock and crops for the coming year. Families, children, youth, and adults, as well as dancers and singers, participate in the celebrations.
These rituals have deep-rooted cultural meanings, as they provide the community with a sense of belonging and cultural identity, as well as an opportunity to strengthen relationships. The concerned communities ensure the continuity of this cultural element through their annual participation in the Spring Celebration, and all knowledge and skills related to it are transmitted within the family and among community members through oral communication, observation, participation, and performances.
Spring Celebration, Hıdrellez was inscribed in 2017 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in North Macedonia, Turkey.
