Tyre, Sour, is an historic city located in the South Governorate of Lebanon. It was founded by Phoenicians in the 2nd millennium BC. The city has a number of ancient sites date from different periods (Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic), the most important of which are: The Tyre Roman Hippodrome and the Al-Bass Tyre necropolis from the 2nd AD, in addition to the ancient Roman baths, the Aqueduct, the two palaestrae, the Roman colonnaded road, the residential quarter, as well as the remains of the cathedral built in 1127 AD and some remains of an ancient Crusader castle. Tyre was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.
