Fort Richelieu is a historic French military fort located at the mouth of the Richelieu River in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, Canada. It was originally built in 1641 AD by Charles Huault de Montmagny, the first Governor of New France, to defend against Iroquois raids and to protect the key water route between New France and Lake Champlain. The fort was destroyed by the Iroquois in 1647 AD and later rebuilt in 1665 AD by the Carignan-Salières Regiment as part of a larger military strategy to secure the colony’s southern frontier.
