Castle Hill is a historic British military site located in Placentia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It was originally fortified by the French in the 17th century, when Placentia (Plaisance) served as the capital of French Newfoundland. After the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 AD, the British took control of the site and built Fort Frederick and later Fort Royal on the hill to assert dominance and protect the harbor. Castle Hill played a key role in the struggle for control between the French and British in North America. Today, it is a National Historic Site, offering a panoramic view and interpretation of colonial military history in Newfoundland.
