Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean
Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean is a biosphere reserve located between Spain and Morocco, starting in the rugged mountains of southern Spain, extending through Andalusia and northern Morocco through the Strait of Gibraltar, and provides a unique example of ecological, social, and economic integration between north and south. The reserve is distinguished by the diversity of its natural environments and includes more than 2,000 species of plants and animals, with important endemic species, such as Spanish fir, black juniper, and cedar.
The region also plays an important role in the migrations of birds between Europe and Africa, as well as in the transit of different species of cetaceans and coral assemblages.
Intercontinental Biosphere Reserve of the Mediterranean is included in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
