Al-Taghrooda, Traditional Bedouin Chanted Poetry in the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman
Al-Taghrooda is a traditional Bedouin poetry composed and recited by men on camelbacks as they travel between the deserts of the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman. The Taghrooda consists of short poems performed by two groups of men.
The first group begins with a first verse, the second completes with a new on, and so on. Today, Al-Taghrooda is performed at weddings and events, in addition to camel races.
The performances provide a chance for audiences to learn about their history and look at their traditional way of life. The knowledge of composing and chanting poems is transmitted through the family and the elderly in the community.
Al-Taghrooda, Traditional Bedouin Chanted Poetry in the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman was inscribed in 2012 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Oman, UAE.
