Shaharah
Shaharah, also spelled Shahareh or Shehara, is a historic mountain village and the administrative center of Shaharah District in Amran Governorate, Yemen. The settlement is situated high in Yemen’s western highlands and is characterized by traditional stone houses and historic water cisterns adapted to the mountainous terrain. The area is particularly renowned for the Shaharah Bridge, a remarkable limestone arch bridge constructed in the 17th century by a local ruler to connect two villages separated by a deep mountain gorge. The bridge is considered one of Yemen’s most distinctive architectural landmarks and reflects the engineering skill of local builders in adapting to the dramatic landscape.
The site is included on the UNESCO Tentative List under the official name, Shaharah City and its Bridge.
