Marib is the capital city of the Marib Governorate, Yemen and was the capital of the Sabaean kingdom in the 1st millennium BC. The Sabaean kings built great irrigation works such as the Marib dams, whose ruins are still visible. The Marib Dam supported a flourishing culture for more than a thousand years until its collapse in 575 AD. Marib was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.
