Aden is a historical city located in southern Yemen, strategically positioned at the entrance of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It was founded in antiquity within the crater of an extinct volcano, giving it a distinctive horseshoe-shaped natural harbor open to the sea. From early times, Aden functioned simultaneously as a city, port, and marketplace, playing a pivotal role in international maritime trade linking Asia, Africa, and Europe. Its exceptional location made it a focal point for cultural, commercial, and religious exchange between East and West. The oldest city dates back to the reign of the Kingdom of Awsan in the first millennium BC, and was subsequently inhabited by the civilizations of southern Arabia, later becoming a major hub in international trade networks linked to the Roman and Indian worlds.
The site is one of the elements included in the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage designation, The Historic City of Aden.
