Cisterns of Tawila
The Cisterns of Tawila, also known as the Aden Cisterns, represent the most prominent historic monument in Aden, Yemen. The complex consists of a carefully engineered system of interconnected stone cisterns of varying shapes and capacities, designed to collect, store, and regulate rainwater descending from the surrounding volcanic slopes. The origins of this hydraulic system date back to the Himyarite Kingdom, between 115 BC and AD 525, reflecting advanced knowledge of water management and environmental adaptation in southern Arabia.
The site is one of the elements included in the UNESCO Tentative List for World Heritage designation, The Historic City of Aden.
