Shibam is a historic town in Yemen, renowned for its ancient urban heritage. It served as the capital of the Hadramawt Kingdom during the 3rd century AD, playing a central role in the political and commercial life of southern Arabia. Shibam later became famous for its distinctive multi-storey mudbrick architecture, which represents one of the earliest examples of vertical urban planning in the world. Shibam was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
The site is a UNESCO World Heritage site with the official name, Old Walled City of Shibam.
