Ahellil of Gourara
Ahellil of Gourara
Ahellil of Gourara is a poetic heritage and music that exist in the Guarara region in the Algerian oases. It is held during the night on religious occasions and weddings, and both women and men participate in its performance.
Today this tradition is threatened by the dwindling number of occasions on which it is performed, the decline in traditional festivities, the migration of young people to the cities and the prevailing preference to listen to widely available recordings of lullaby rather than actually participate in live performances.
Ahellil of Gourara was inscribed in 2008 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Algeria.
