Annual Pilgrimage to the Mausoleum of Sidi ‘Abd el-Qader Ben Mohammed (Sidi Cheikh)
Annual pilgrimage to the mausoleum of Sidi ‘Abd el-Qader Ben Mohammed (Sidi Cheikh) is a Sufi ritual that includes a three-day pilgrimage to the shrine of Sidi Abd al-Qadir ibn Muhammad in the city of El Abiodh Sidi Cheikh. The occasion includes a set of practices that promote societal and religious values such as praise and recitation of the Noble Qur’an, in addition to songs, dances, duels and equestrian competitions.
This spiritual knowledge is learned and transmitted within families, while Sufi masters teach the main Sufi rituals and prayers to beginners through formal teaching.
Annual Pilgrimage to the Mausoleum of Sidi ‘Abd el-Qader Ben Mohammed (Sidi Cheikh) was inscribed in 2013 on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in Algeria.
