Sidi Bou Said
Sidi Bou Said is a historic coastal town located near Tunis, Tunisia, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Renowned for its distinctive blue-and-white architecture, the town developed as a cultural and spiritual center from the 13th century, taking its name from the Sufi saint Abu Said al-Baji, who is buried there. Sidi Bou Said became a major hub for artists, writers, and intellectuals in the 19th and 20th centuries, and strict building regulations helped preserve its unique architectural character. Today, it stands as one of Tunisia’s most iconic heritage towns, celebrated for its scenic beauty, artistic legacy, and enduring cultural identity.
The site is included on the UNESCO Tentative List under the official name, Village of Sidi Bou Said: Architectural and spiritual harmony in the Mediterranean.
