Egyptian Museum in Cairo
Egyptian Museum in Cairo is a landmark cultural institution located in Tahrir Square, Cairo, Egypt. It was built between 1897 and 1902 following an international competition launched by the Egyptian government, and was designed by the French architect Marcel Dourgnon, making it the first purpose-built national museum in the Middle East. The museum houses the largest collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the world, with artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to the Graeco-Roman period, including royal mummies, monumental statues, reliefs, papyri, and the treasures of Tutankhamun. Beyond its architectural and historical importance, the museum has long served as a global center for the study, conservation, and exhibition of ancient Egyptian civilization, setting a foundational model for modern museology in the region.
The site is included on the UNESCO Tentative List under the official name, Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
