Banjul is a city located on Banjul Island (St Mary's Island) where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean. It is capital and fourth largest city of The Gambia. The city was founded in 1816 AD by Alexander Grant who was a British Army officer who served as the first Commandant of Banjul Island (St Mary's Island) from 1816 to 1826 AD.
