The Cultural Landscape of Ivvavik / Vuntut / Herschel Island
The rich and complex human history of the cultural landscape of the Ivvavik, Vuntut and Herschel Island areas is expressed through archaeological evidence scattered on the ground. These areas were considered a key areas for the indigenous people of North America, and it illustrates the successive occupations that people have undertaken there over the millennia, including ancient settlements and tool-making sites, as well as the mechanisms they used to adapt to evolving climatic events. In addition to this, a group of archaeological monuments are scattered on Herschel Island, as the island includes traces related to the whaling industry in the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including historical buildings and cemetery sites.
