Wadi Howar is one of the most prominent natural attractions in Sudan south of the Sahara, where the reserve is considered one of the largest national parks in the world. The reserve features diverse flora and outstanding geological features including volcanic landscapes such as the Meidob volcanic field, Jabal Rahib and numerous paleo lakes.
The reserve is also characterized by a distinctive biodiversity, where there are Dorcas gazelle, Barbary sheep, ostriches and other animals. In the past, between 9500-3000 years ago, the valley was the largest tributary of the Nile that came from the desert.
