Protected Forests in the Agadez Region

Protected Forests in the Agadez Region is a group of flooded tree and forest-steppe located in the Agadez Region of northern Niger. The region includes natural forests of exceptional value, characterized by large plant resources, despite the extremely dry climatic conditions.
The most important species of trees there are acacias, good doum palms (Hyphaene thebaica), Egyptian balsam (Balanites aegyptiaca), Calotropis procera, Ziziphus mauritiana, and others. This group of forests provides timber for daily use and for sale, and is an important grazing area, protecting herders from the semi-permanent sandstorms in the area.
One of the most important forests is Tamazalak Forest on the western slopes of the Aïr Mountains.
Protected Forests in the Agadez Region was submitted in 2006 to the UNESCO Tentative List in Niger.
