Pond of Ossolo

Pond of Ossolo

Pond of Ossolo, or Mare d' Ossolo, is a semi-permanent pond located in the far west of Niger. Rainwater and streams feed the pond, as its size varies with different periods of the year.
The area around the Ossolo pond is characterized by an intermittent grassy vegetation spread over the steppe, in which trees and shrubs that are well adapted to drought predominate, such as acacia trees, especially the Acacia nilotica. The area is home to many animals.
Among the main types of mammals there are red-fronted gazelle (Eudorcas rufifrons), wild rabbits, squirrels, and wild boar, in addition to many reptiles and fish, as well as migratory and endemic bird species such as guinea fowl, francolin and the doves.
Pond of Ossolo was submitted in 2006 to the UNESCO Tentative List in Niger.
