The Giraffe Biosphere Reserve

The Giraffe Biosphere Reserve

The Giraffe Biosphere Reserve is a biosphere reserve located within the boundaries of the W National Park in Niger. The reserve is the last concentration of giraffes in West Africa, where poaching combined with increasing human pressure through expansion of agriculture, deforestation and uncontrolled deforestation has led to the mass disappearance of giraffes from all West African countries except Niger.
The vegetation in the reserve is characterized by the spread of herbaceous plants and shrubby savannas on plateaus, in addition to wooded savannas consisting mainly of acacia. The reserve is also home to the Red-fronted gazelle, Common warthog, and a few small carnivores.
This area is also an important habitat for reptiles such as crocodiles and turtles, in addition to being a popular destination for migratory birds and waterfowl.
The Giraffe Biosphere Reserve was submitted in 2006 to the UNESCO Tentative List in Niger.
