Built in 1846 AD as part of the Kingston fortifications, it was designed to protect the city and its harbor during a period of heightened tensions with the United States. Constructed of limestone, the circular tower features thick walls, a cannon platform, and living quarters for troops. Murney Tower, which is is now a museum and a National Historic Site, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 as part of Rideau Canal.
