    Kairouan is the capital of the Kairouan Governorate in Tunisia. The city was founded by the Umayyads around 670 AD. During its long history, the city was an important center for Islamic scholarship and Quranic learning, and thus it attracted many Muslims from various parts of the world. The holy Mosque of Uqba is situated in the city. Kairouan was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988.
