Bura Archaeological Site

Bura Archaeological Site is an ancient necropolis site located in the Tillabéri Region in southwestern Niger. The site gives its name to the Iron Age Bura culture, a culture centered in the lower Niger River valley in both Niger and Burkina Faso in the first millennium BC. The archaeological site of Bura consists of many individual necropolises with coffins topped with small statues, urns, and funerary pots made of terra cotta. The site also includes a group of burial mounds, altars, and offering places, in addition to many ancient dwellings. The clay statues discovered at the site are believed to be the oldest equestrian clay statues in the Sahel region of Africa or even in the world.
